Art Market Jakarta 7: Kertasbykarls

We’d like to introduce you to all participants of Art Market Jakarta 7 that will be held on April 28-30, 2017 at Kuningan City, South Jakarta. One of them is Kertasbykarls, a creative merchandise based on illustrations and writings managed by Karlina Satrioputri. Read our Q&A below:

Karlina Satrioputri, founder of Kertasbykarls

Catalyst Arts (CA): Tell us a little bit about your brand, and how you came to begin your brand.

Kertasbykarls (KK): I’m Karlina Satrioputri and I just started Kertasbykarls since 7 months ago (September 2016). I graduated from University of Indonesia, majoring in Interior Architecture. I love music, painting, fashion, and photography. Words and writings are also some ways to express things that I like to do aside from abstract or pattern paintings. I used to work at various interior design bureau with more sophisticated life but I chose the hard way, entrepreneurship, because the journey is more fun but I have to be braver and a fighter.

Kertasbykarls was created for me to save myself during my identity crisis and career crisis. I started it by accident but I also planned to make it. At first, I wanted to produce my original illustrations on merchandise that not so many people are familiar with. It all began with my liking towards notebook and sketchbook, so I started to find out how to bind a book. Slowly by sure, I spent about two months to learn book binding techniques that I thought are great in the market and efficient for me to do it alone. I self-taught everything, from the book binding techniques to the business side but I always try to be better and better. I hope Kertasbykarls can inspire and connect with a lot of people.

CA: What kind of artworks or products that you prepare for Art Market Jakarta 7?

KK: I will bring handmade notebook bindings and handmade notebooks with original illustrations and quotes with A5-size: saddle stitch notebook, coptic stitch notebook, hardcover spiral notebook. Our product is special because people can mix and match the illustration, the binding, and the papers that we have. We will also launch mini notes, a special product for Art Market 7! Kertasbykarls also provide full handmade notebook with a cover made of Italian classic illustration.

CA: Tell us about your favourite product from your collection!

KK: That would be Coptic Stitch Notebook with Oblique no 06 illustration and Pink Poly thread binding. This book has 144 pages and looks really beautiful and complicated. We use coptic binding technique for this book, the first binding technique used to bind papyrus that contained ancient manuscript.

CA: Name one resource that inspires your brand the most.

KK: Fashion designers Balmain and Karl Lagerfeld inspire the shape and texture of our books, while Pablo Picasso and Indonesian artist Arifien Neif inspire the story, shape, and colours of our books.

CA: What is your plan for your brand in the near future?

KK: In the future we will produce other merchandise based on illustrations and quotes. We still specialise in notebooks and hopefully you can see Kertasbykarls in various bookstores in Jakarta as well as reputable online boutiques.

CA: Tell us how to find out more about your brand?

KK: You can check our Instagram @Kertasbykarls, Facebook Page: Kertasbykarls, or email us kertasbykarls@gmail.com.
